Fender is the most commercially successful brand of a Fender Musical Instruments Company (FMIC). So for convenience the company itself is also often referred to simply as Fender. Nowadays FMIC is the world’s largest guitar manufacturer owning such brands like Fender, Gretsch, Squier, Charvel, EVH, Jackson, etc.
The company was founded in the early 1940’s and was named by its founder Leo Fender. Leo was a qualified electronics technician running his own shop where he was building amplifiers and public-address systems for rent. Later Leo invented and patented a new pickup for electric guitars where the strings passed through the magnetic coil. And that’s how he started manufacturing and selling guitars.
The reason for Fender’s success is company’s commitment to quality and innovations. They have their own Research & Development department responsible for technological advancements of their products range. Fender also closely collaborates with musicians, listens to their requirements and implements them as new features in their products. Moreover they opened Fender Custom Shop in Corona, California which can produce fully individual custom-made electric guitars.
FMIC is now internationally known for its solid body electric guitars, bass guitars, amplifiers and related equipment. It’s hard to overestimate their contribution into popular music as it is really huge. It’s enough to mention that their guitar became guitar of choice for such music legends like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, The Beatles, David Gilmour, Ritchie Blackmore, Buddy Guy, Mark Knopfler and many more.
