Gibson SG guitar series (“SG” stands for “solid guitar”) was initially introduced as a heavily revised Les Paul version. It has thinner solid body with a slimmer neck and a double cutaway, and suits perfectly to rock and metal styles. Thanks to such a modernization SG guitars have reduced production cost (and thus the price) and provide easier access to upper frets for guitarists. Most probably these are the reasons why Gibson SG Standard is their best-selling model of all times.
